Melbourne and Canberra are quickly switching to drought tolerant warm season turf varieties, and away from cool climate turf. There are a few ways that cool season turf (Rye or Fescue predominantly) can be converted to warm season grasses, and quite a few varieties of Warm season turf to chose from, including Couch, Zoysia and Buffalo. With these many options, there is still one thing that is certain, and that is that Melbourne and Canberra can no longer afford to use water hungry cool season turf in parks, ovals, golf courses, roadsides, amenity areas and home lawns. The available water supply for such growing cities can not possibly support it.
